The Korea Green Foundation (Chief Director Choi Yeol) and 29 influential others from diverse fields and classes have hosted a press conference to publish the suggestion of the environmental constitution, which stipulates, “The Republic of Korea holds an obligation to overcome the climate and biodiversity crisis and pass down sustainable environment to the descendants” on Article 1, Paragraph 3 of the Constitution of Republic of Korea.

 

At the press conference, ▲Yeol Choi, the chief director of the Korea Green Foundation, ▲Nak In Seong, the former president of Seoul National University, ▲Jae Cheon Choi, professor of Ewha Womans University ▲Hong Gil Um, mountaineer and others have attended for a speech to call upon the revision of the constitution and to reveal performance. Also, ▲Ho Joong Yoon, the representative of the Democratic Party of Korea, ▲Jin Hee Park, actress ▲Seong Ki An, actor ▲Jae Seung Jeong, professor of KAIST, etc., were also registered as proposers.

 

The chief director of the Korea Green Foundation, Yeol Choi, stated the purpose of the proposal saying, “it is necessary to revise Article 1 of the constitution to actively and practically correspond to the threat of the global climate crises.”

 

The group has also announced a plan to hold a public hearing to unfold the background of the foundation of Article 1, Paragraph 3 of the constitution and to listen to various opinions of the members, and to request a parliamentary passage of the newly established constitution by collecting not only the opinions of the members of the ruling and opposition parties but also youths and people from the future generation. They have proposed to execute a national referendum for the constitution revision simultaneously with the presidential election scheduled on March 9th, 2022. Director Choi has stressed the importance of achieving the mutual consent between the ruling and opposition parties for the constitution revision to go through the congress and revealed his strong ambitions to continue to collect the opinions of the members of the congress and the public.
